Grub Alert: Hunger

This Fremont eatery moves on down to bigger and brighter things.

Hunger reopened its doors in the old Dad Watson’s building in lower Fremont last month. With longer hours, more space, and multiple opportunities for happy hour Hunger is bringing fresh Spanish and Mediterranean inspired food to the people of Fremont in a big way.

The new space features an open kitchen, patio, communal dining table for large parties, and of course a prominently featured bar at the heart of the restaurant.  While the new location lacks some of the dark coziness of Hunger’s old spot, a tiny space just up the hill, they’ve managed to duplicate its old look on a larger scale.  Dinners will find plenty of candlelight, rod iron, and hanging lanterns to reassure you that this space is no longer a neighborhood pub, but a sophisticated spot that aims to serve all ends of the spectrum.

With an extensive happy hour everyday from 4 to 6pm and again late night from 10 to 11pm, as well as full dinner 7 days a week from 5 to 10pm, Seattleites have many opportunities to enjoy Hunger’s wide arrange of seasonal vegetables, seafood, and not to be outdone- meat.  Their signature dish- the Jumbo Prawn and Seafood Paella is not to be missed if you are dining with friends (serves up to 12 people).

Another must try- their Holy Smokes Burger with Chipotle Gouda, Curry Aioli, Bacon, and the best pickles you’ve ever had ($17 or $7 on the Happy Hour menu). Or if you’re in the mood for something lighter, start with their Albacore Tuna Ceviche with a Seared Egg Yolk, Mojo Verde, Micro Greens, and more delicious Harissa Pickled Cucumber ($14).

Since Hunger’s bar is still a main focus of the new space, their cocktail list includes many classics like the Americano ($8), twists like the Maple Syrup Old Fashioned (9), and Spanish influenced drinks like the Con Clasé (9), which features the Spanish vermouth Perrucchi Blanco. If cocktails aren’t your jam, Hunger also boasts a rather extensive Spanish Wine list, and their bartenders would just as happily serve you a Hamms and a shot ($5 all day, everyday).

And, if by the time the weekend rolls around and you haven’t had enough of Hunger, check out their brunch 10am to 2pm which features a Hangover Breakfast (Poutine and a fried Egg) and “Hangover Hour” at 1 pm with $5 dollar Bloody Marys and Mimosa, the perfect cure for a late night.  Overall, Hunger 2.0 seems to fill all of your eating and drinking needs- day or late night and Fremont seems lucky to have them back.
