Restaurateur Roy Yamaguchi, in partnership with the Puyallup Tribe, is opening Woven Seafood & Chophouse on July 9 on Tacoma’s waterfront. Owned by the Puyallup Tribe and managed by Columbia Hospitality, Woven aims to celebrate the rich fusion of Yamaguchi’s Japanese heritage and pioneering Hawaii regional cuisine, with the culinary traditions of the Puyallup Tribe and the bounty of the Pacific Northwest.

The concept for Woven was developed by Yamaguchi, a James Beard Award–winning chef and esteemed restaurateur known for his innovative fusion of Hawaii and Asian cuisines, and his long-standing commitment to sustainability. Woven is his first restaurant to open in the Pacific Northwest. The executive chef of Woven will be Dexter Mina, a Yamaguchi restaurant alumnus with deep roots in both Hawaii and Seattle’s culinary community.

“Woven is designed to weave together the culinary and cultural threads of Puyallup with Hawaii and Japanese traditions,” said Chef Yamaguchi. “Our menu will offer a modern and blended twist on steak and seafood, emphasizing local ingredients and traditional techniques.”

Woven Seafood & Chophouse is owned by the Puyallup Tribe and sits upon Puyallup tribal land. Located on Tacoma’s waterfront Ruston Way, Woven is replacing a former C.I. Shenanigans restaurant, which closed in 2020. The Puyallup Tribe purchased the Ruston Way property in 2021 as part of the Tribe’s long-term re-establishment of its presence on the original Puyallup homeland.

“Woven is a way for people to connect with our ancestral homeland, integrating traditional elements with modern culinary artistry,” said the Puyallup Tribal Council, the Tribe’s governing body. “This collaboration with our friend Roy Yamaguchi has allowed us to create a space that reflects our heritage and looks to the future. We hope it will become a favorite spot for people all over the area.”

After a top-to-bottom renovation, designed by Tacoma-based Ferguson Architecture and constructed by Korsmo Construction, Woven will open as a 15,000-square-foot full-service restaurant with nearly 250 seats, an expansive patio with unparalleled views of Commencement Bay, an elegant yet welcoming bar and lounge area, and several private dining and events spaces upstairs. It also sits next to the new terminal for Kenmore Air’s seaplane service, connecting Tacoma with the San Juan Islands, further positioning its location as a premier destination in the Pacific Northwest.

Puyallup Tribal Enterprises (PTE) engaged Columbia Hospitality, a Seattle-based management and consulting group, to manage the restaurant and ensure a world-class dining experience while prioritizing the employment of Tribal members and local workers. PTE selected Columbia Hospitality for its award-winning expertise in the restaurant business and extensive experience in the Northwest.

Woven Seafood & Chophouse will open to the public on July 9, and reservations are now available. For more information, please visit eatwoven.com.
