A Romance & Relaxation Skeptic Meets Her Match

Still searching for that perfect Valentine’s gift idea? Opt for a romantic getaway – spa treatments included, of course.

I’ve never much been a fan of romance. It usually feels so forced. And relaxation? I’ll opt for the back-cracking beatdown of a Thai massage over its soothing Swedish counterpart any day. And when my yoga instructor asks us to “clear our minds and relax”? That’s when I get my mental to do list sorted for the day.

So when I was pitched the idea of the ultimate “romance and relaxation” getaway at Alderbrook Resort & Spa I was mildly skeptical. But after a 24-hour reprieve from my Android and bottomless To Do list, I found that inner peace is achievable after all.

Here’s how you, too, can achieve the ultimate romance and relaxation retreat within just a couple hours from downtown.

Step One: Craft the perfect playlist to get you and your date through the two-hour drive (or, better yet, opt for the less-stressful option of the Seattle-to-Bremerton ferry).

Step Two: Upon arrival to the beyond-quaint town (I use that term loosely) of Union, turn off your phone (OK, mine went to silent).

Step Three: Check in at the expansive-yet-cozy lodge and step out onto your balcony to take in the serene view of Hood Canal. [Cue the eagles soaring overhead.]

Step Four: Head to the bar for a handcrafted cocktail (or two – you’re not driving any where) while you wait for your dinner reservation. A little “dessert” before dinner? Ask the bartender for their specialty Red Velvet Cake cocktail.

Order the Grand Marnier Prawns as an appetizer (this is a requirement) – the perfect starter for the mouth-watering entrees that await. Try the Dungenous Crab Cakes or the Seared Scallops. Even vegetarians can delight in the Roasted Beet Cous Cous. With Executive Chef Tristan Holst (formerly of El Gaucho Seattle) at the helm, disappointment is not an option.

Step Six: Go for a post-dinner stroll along the moonlit grounds, then head out onto the dock hovering above the peaceful bay for the perfect kiss under the stars. Head back to your comfortable room for a good night’s rest or [insert other extracurricular activity of choice here].

Step Seven: Head to the spa for your pre-booked treatment – but go early, allowing yourself enough time to relax in the steam room or sauna before being pampered. Opt for one of the holiday specials – Chocolate Facial or the Peppermint & Chocolate Invigorating Body Glow. Or for the romantic relaxation, sign up for the ultimate couples treatment, The Cupid’s Bow, which includes an aromatherapy bath soak for two, a 90-minute Couples Alderbrook Signature Massage, 30-minute Reflexology and a bottle of red wine to go.

If you can, snag a late check out — after the wining, dining and rubdowns you might need some more time to partake in those extra curricular activities. Your phone messages and To Do list can wait.
