There are days when some of us would be willing to scour the earth for a great piece of chocolate. Our bodies crave it. Some of us might go so far to say, if we had the choice, we might even bathe in it.
Well, now we can get even closer to our fabulous fantasies of chocolate indulgence…
Some companies produce chocolate spa products by incorporating a synthetic chocolate fragrance into them. Sweet Beauty Spa, straight out of Seattle, contains no artificial ingredients — they are 100 percent natural, using organic, fair-trade chocolate from our city’s Theo Gourmet Chocolate.
To get the inside scoop on these delicious goodies, we had a chat with founder, Lisa Francoise Shafer:
Seattleite: When did you first decide to get into the spa industry?
Lisa Francoise Shafer: I fell into it actually. I went to Esthetic school in the 90s, and I also worked in the restaurant industry. I started making chocolate and experimented with the ingredients. I had the knowledge of making food and skincare, and I decided to make chocolate skincare products, but I wanted to make them better. I met the owner of Theo Gourmet Chocolate, and she said, if you make them, I will buy them. I had no intentions of conquering the world, but people seemed to like them.
Seattleite: What are the products that make you stand out in the industry, and why are they special?
LFS: We make everything as if we were creating a phenomenal dessert. Each product that we use needs to have an affect on the skin, and they need to be food-grade quality. There are natural SPFs in our products. We don’t use any cheap ingredients or fillers. We have designed the ultimate spa product because of the highest quality of ingredients.
Seattleite: Who is your greatest inspiration in the industry or in life?
LFS: My biggest inspiration is my mom — she is French, and the hardest working person I know. Our community of entrepreneurs in Seattle is a really cool thing as well. Women are very supportive of each other here, and we really try to help each other succeed.
Seattleite: What is your own skincare routine?
LFS: I am a mom and have a very busy life with not a lot of time for myself. So I cut the beauty routine everyday by using our sugar scrub in the shower — it exfoliates and moisturizes, so I can save the step of moisturizing later. I also use our lip confection all day long; it tastes amazing. Plus, I also use our Pot de Creme on my hands several times a day.
Seattleite: As far as skincare is concerned, what would you tell our readers?
LFS: I have three pieces of advice: 1. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t wear it on your skin. 2. Skincare products should be a natural way for you to feel good. 3. Almost nothing makes you feel better than chocolate.
Sweet Beauty products are carried at Whole Foods, Theo Gourmet Chocolate, Julep Nail Parlor, Metropolitan Market (as well as many Spa’s and Gourmet food stores across the country).
