Get your spirits up with the sips at the annual Hop Scotch Festival!
Hop: The flower of a hop vine that is used as a flavoring and preserving agent in beer, often contributing a bitterness to the beer.
Scotch: What Ron Burgundy likes to drink.
Hop Scotch: Seattle’s premiere beer, scotch, wine, tequila and cigar festival. It’s the one and only that fits those qualifications all at Fremont Studios tonight and tomorrow.
This spring beer and scotch focused tasting is disguised as a drinking festival all to benefit the Seattle Interntaional Film Festival (SIFF), to support their mission to create and discover extraordinary films. The festival starts tonight at 5 p.m. until midnight, then again tomorrow from 1 p.m. to midnight at Fremont Studios.
Being the savvy Seattleites that they are, Fremont Studios’ chic indoor party getup is built for a good time, surrounded by sound-stages, optimal lighting and a dance floor half the size of a football field. With two separate rooms, Hop Scotch is guaranteed to be well worth the $30 it takes to get in the door.
The minimal fee at the door will get you a commemorative tasting glass and five tasting tokens while an extra five bucks will double your token tally. (Non-tasting admission is available including admission and four tickets for bottled water or soda) Wine, beer, tequila, cider and cigars are all redeemable with the tokens.
Tying in Don Draper’s preferred companions — scotch and Heiniken — this year’s theme is centralized around the swank and swagger of AMC’s Mad Men and the swinging 60s. Enjoy the likes of Johnny and Jose or stay classy with fine wines from Des Voigne or the ales of Bridgeport Brewing.
Put on your favorite skinny tie or your best Jackie O dress and follow these insider tips to get your drink on in the hippest of fashions:
* Get there early: For the sake of elbow room and time (it takes about three hours to get around to everything), you want to come on the fresher side of Hop Scotch. Plus the producers from the distilleries, wineries and breweries typically try to bail at their stations as soon as they possibly can so they can join you in the fun.
* Pace yourself: Five ounces is almost half of a pint, those little puppies bite harder than you might think. Drink responsibly and set up a designated driver or hail one of the many cabs that will be circling out front. Parking on the streets is free and does not regard to the hourly limits on Sunday when you’re battling your hangover.
*Get on the food: Catered by White Linen chef Scott Megargle, be sure to nab some of the beer braised brats with caramelized onions & sauerkraut on a Fresh House baked bun for only $6 (veggie brats also available).
* Sample smartly: When trying beer and wine, taste light to dark so you can get the optimal flavors of the light without the dark over powering them. Each table should be able to guide you to your preference either way.
* Gain scotch credit: Sign up for a one-hour Scotch Seminar with Master of Whisky, Breck Taylor.
Tickets are now only available at-the-now, so make sure you’re own time on the day you choose to go.
So you’re coming now, right? Don’t come crying to us when everyone is talking about it at the office on Monday. We tried to warn you.
