A Sweet Getaway: Bremerton Blackberry Festival

Celebrate Labor Day by satisfying your taste buds — and staining your fingertips.

What: The 22nd Annual Bremerton Blackberry Festival will be held this weekend, offering many different kinds of food-related activities for both adults and children. Since its inception in 1990, the festival has drawn quite a crowd. Last year alone, 50,000 visitors flocked to Bremerton for the weekend.

You can taste blackberry jams, jellies, pies, cobblers, wine and cider, while the kids will be wowed by magicians, musicians and face-painters. Other attractions include tours of the USS Turner Joy, Berry Bike Race and more than 100 vendors and booths. Even the sidewalks will be interesting, thanks to the devoted chalk artists that decorate the city’s walkways every year.

Who: Blackberry lovers of all ages who enjoy good food and entertainment should attend this weekend’s festivities — chances are, that means you!

Where: The picturesque City of Bremerton Boardwalk, which overlooks the Puget Sound in the shadow of the Olympic Mountains, will be the location for this year’s festivities.

When: In true Pacific Northwest fashion, the Bremerton Blackberry Festival is held each year, rain or shine, on Labor Day weekend. The 2011 festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Monday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
