Holiday Burlesque That’s Naughty And Nice

Miss Indigo Blue & Co. promise to keep you warm this winter.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, Miss Indigo Blue’s Academy of Burlesque presents a sumptuous feast for the eyes with Jive Turkey, an annual holiday show that features performances from the Academy’s talented alumni. Unlike any other show you’ll catch this holiday season, Jive Turkey is geared toward those who have a fine appreciation of burlesque arts – or just enjoy a good striptease. The show will be performed at the Academy’s studio, located in Capitol Hill’s Oddfellows Building.

Mafia Minx, Pixie Parcelle and Mahogany Sparkles are among those who will take the stage between 9 and 11 p.m. to provide the evening’s entertainment. It should be noted that these performers are not strippers, but professional dancers trained by the Academy to perform classical burlesque on stage. Each student undergoes a series of classes that covers everything from executing tricky maneuvers to choosing a stage name.

Burlesque shows are comprised of striptease, small skits, and comedy. The dancers themselves never get fully nude — but they do get close. The intent is not to be vulgar, but to explore and expose sexuality in a tasteful way – a form of dance hat is meant to entertain and titillate the audience.

Miss Indigo founded the Academy of Burlesque in 2003. Since opening its doors, the academy has attracted many avid fans of the dance form – as well as a handful of curiosity-driven newcomers. Miss Indigo welcomes any and all students — male or female, big or small, experienced or green — to come have fun and release their inner tease. Each handpicked member of the Academy’s faculty has an extensive background in burlesque, and is currently active in the national and international burlesque scene.

“[My goal was to] provide exquisite instruction of burlesque for all folks, of any level, to learn the basics of burlesque, or to fine tune the art of burlesque in order to perform on stage,” she said.

After they attend the show, inspired Seattleites are invited to enroll in the Academy. A four-week beginner’s workshop begins Monday, Nov. 21, where students learn the basics and adopt their own burlesque persona. According to the school, “It is a great way to explore burlesque and develop your ideas without the pressure of performance.” Registration ($375) is online.

If one wishes to bypass the introductory course, Burlesque 101 is scheduled to kick off on Monday, Jan. 9. The six-week course consists of a group lesson every Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., as well as five private classes planned throughout the week. Class topics include burlesque history, costumes and routine choreography, all taught within a supportive environment where even shy students will feel comfortable. Registration ($525 before Dec. 15) is online.

The courses offered by the Academy are just as diverse as the instructors themselves. These include Bump & Grind, an exercise dance class offered twice a week (Tuesdays 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Thursdays 6 – 7:30 p.m.); Bellydance, a conditioning class taught by Fuchsia Foxxx; and Boylesque, — yes that’s Boylesque — a class designed for masculine dancers. Students may pre-register for any class, or just drop by the studio on a whim.

Tickets to Jive Turkey are available online ($30) or at the door ($35). If you miss this show, the Academy of Burlesque will present additional alumni performances on Feb. 25, March 23 and June 25.
