Cartoonist David Horsey and others will donate original work to this noble cause.
It is no question that Seattle has produced great talent over the years, and one of these notable figures includes two-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist and Seattle icon David Horsey. Horsey’s work will be showcased at a fundraising event this month intended to benefit the people of Haiti.
Though he was born in Indiana, Horsey grew up in the Emerald City and worked as an editorial cartoonist for the “The Daily,” University of Washington’s student newspaper. He eventually earned a BA in communications from UW and went on to study at the University of Kent at Canterbury in the United Kingdom, where he earned an MA in international relations. Horsey is perhaps best known for his work as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s editorial cartoonist for the past three decades.
Horsey has received 13 first place regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for cartooning, governmental reporting and spot news reporting. He also won the 1999 Susan Hutchison Bosch Award for outstanding achievement in journalism.
Carbon Roots International, a non-profit created to help small-scale Haitian farmers, will host the first annual Bon Lavni cocktail party and silent art auction. The show will feature original artwork from Horsey, as well as more than 20 other local and Haitian artists.
The art show and auction will be held Thursday, Dec. 22 at Sole Repair Shop on Capitol Hill. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets ($20 per person) are available online.
The season of giving is upon us, so while you sip delicious drinks and browse original artwork at Bon Lavni, know that you will also be supporting a country in its time of need.
