Laughter & Tears: Seattle Shakespeare Company

A trio of classics from The Bard, presented at the Center House Theatre in 2012.

The Seattle Shakespeare Company will kick off the New Year with three time-honored works from the Bard of Avon: “Coriolanus,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “As You Like It.

Since 1991, Seattle Shakespeare Company has performed the playwright’s tragedies, comedies and histories at the Seattle Center House Theatre. In addition to this permanent indoor home, the actors visit several parks throughout Washington state every summer; these free performances are produced by Wooden O, a company that merged with Seattle Shakespeare Company in 2008.

Seattle Shakespeare Company and Wooden O are committed to the preservation and dedicated production of Shakespeare’s plays, as well as other dramatic works of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. The Bard’s stories and characters have endured for centuries, thanks to his signature blend of timeless themes and contemporary sociocultural boundaries. Ultimately, his work provides valuable insight into the human experience.

Coriolanus

Director: David Quickstall

Performance dates: Wednesday, Jan. 4 — Sunday, Jan. 29

This tragedy follows the life of legendary Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus. Hailed as a heroic general on the battlefield, Coriolanus returns home and is convinced by his mother to run for the Roman Senate. Once elected, he finds that politics can be much more dangerous than warfare. Tickets ($25-38) are available online.

Romeo and Juliet

Performance dates: Wednesday, Jan. 18 — Saturday, Jan. 28

Early in his career, Shakespeare adapted this play — arguably his most beloved work — from “The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet,” an Italian tale by Arthur Brooke. Today, the short-lived, ill-fated romance of Ms. Capulet and Mr. Montague is hailed by many as the greatest love story of all time. Ticket ($22-32) are available online.

As You Like It

Director: George Mount

Performance dates: Wednesday, May 30 — Sunday, June 24

This enthralling audience favorite is thought to have been written at the turn of the 17th century — the peak of Shakespeare’s career — and is today one of his most often performed comedies. “As You Like It” follows its heroine, Rosalind, after she is exiled from her home and joined by her cousin Celia and Touchstone, the court jester. The merry trio wander into the Forest of Arden, where they encounter love, adventure and a hungry lioness. Tickets ($25-38) are available online.
