Sexy Food: Fine, Charitable Dining At FareStart

Guest Chef Night showcases some first-class flavor for a fundamentally good cause.

The New Year brings with it new contemplations on — and possibly resolutions for — how we live our lives. Whether you’ve resolved to hit the gym or hit the books, a little giving is always in order. It’s extra rewarding to give when there’s food involved, and that’s just what you get at FareStart.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, Chef Peter Jahnke from Fonte Café & Wine Bar will cook up a storm at FareStart — and a three-course meal can be yours for a mere $24.95. Jahnke’s appearance is part of FareStart’s Guest Chef Night, which is held every Thursday evening.

FareStart is a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals. For the past 19 years, the organization has provided employment opportunities to nearly 5,000 people and served more than 4.5 million meals to disadvantaged men, women, and children. FareStart’s mission is to foster a community that transforms lives one individual at a time — and they do just that with their award-winning program.

Since 1994, Guest Chef Night has raised more than $3.5 million, all of which supports job training and placement. If you haven’t attended one of the feasts yet, this menu should be enough to get your reservation fingers clicking. Chef Jahnke’s upcoming itinerary includes:

  • Starter: Soup Pistou, Hearty Vegetable Soup with Basil Oil and Parmigiano Reggiano
  • Entrée: Mushroom-Stuffed Chicken Wrapped in Prosciutto, Creamy Polenta, Tri-Color Baby Carrots and Mushroom Demi
  • Vegetarian Entrée: Grilled Portabella with Creamy Polenta and Tri-Color Baby Carrots
  • Dessert: Mocha Bread Pudding, Fonté F2 Espresso Crème Anglaise

Fonte Coffee and Wine Bar has become the go-to avante espresso destination in downtown Seattle. Already known for class and elegance, their partnership with FareStart proves they’re about so much more than making money. Even if you can’t make the dinner, head around the corner to Fonte next time you’re perusing vegetables and ogling salmon at Pike Place. They pull a mean shot and pour a generous sip — but as Chef Peter’s menu proves, the dining options showcase our region’s best.

Reservations for Guest Chef Night ($24.95 per person) can be made online. Seatings will take place between 6 and 6:45 p.m., and then again from 7:30 to 8.
