La Vie En Rose: Fathia Allah Sings Edith Piaf

French crooner receives a Seattle tribute nearly 50 years after her death.

In today’s culture, the name Edith Piaf is often linked to French actress Marion Cotillard, who portrayed Piaf in the 2007 film, “La Vie en rose.” The role won Cotillard the Academy Award for Best Actress, and re-introduced the legendary singer to the American public.

During her brief lifetime, Piaf became an international icon, thanks to her distinctive vocals and moving ballads such as “La Vie en rose,” “Hymne à l’Amour” and “Milord.” When she passed away in 1963 at the age of 47, she was denied a Catholic mass funeral — a testament to her lavish, somewhat scandalous lifestyle. However, that didn’t stop more than 100,000 mourning fans from traveling to Paris to attend her memorial procession.

The singer’s legendary life and career continue today, thanks to the Creative Music Adventures in Wallingford. “A Tribute to Edit Piaf and Her Friends” will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 21, and stars Fathia Atallah, a native French speaker from Toulouse who currently lives in Seattle. She and Piaf share a North African heritage, as well as a passion for French artistic traditions and heart-rending music.

Atallah is renowned as a composer and director. From 1998 to 2003, she led Seattle’s Le Centre Francais Artistique et Culturel de Seattle. The company produced “French Cabaret on Broadway,” a well-received musical revue. Currently, she directs five musical ensembles — Jazz Renouveau, Les Troubadours, Wallingford Big Band Orchestra, Parisian Street Songs and French Cabaret: Souvenirs D’Amour.

This weekend, Atallah takes her love and luster for Piaf’s music to a personal level, with a voice said to “capture the spirit of the little sparrow” in a 90-minute tribute to Paris’ original star songstress. Tickets ($20) are available online; admission for Creative Music Adventure students is $15.
