Summer Concerts Keep Rockin’ Along — With Ample Nostalgia in the Mix

It seems that anyone who’s anyone is touring this summer, and we’re excited to get some of these enticing shows and events on our calendar. There’s been a lot of nostalgia on the lineup already, spanning several decades and ranging from James Taylor at Chateau Ste. Michelle in late May to OK Go at Neptune Theatre in late June, in celebration of their critically acclaimed fifth studio album “And the Adjacent Possible.”

While dates have already come and gone to see Shovels & Rope June 29 at the Big Ponderoo Music & Arts Festival in Sisters, Oregon, and Portland’s Pink Martini — celebrating its 30th anniversary and a brand-new EP — at Chateau Ste. Michelle July 5 , here ‘s a sampling of exciting shows still on the horizon:

London-based powerhouse Mumford & Sons comes to the Gorge on July 18, having just released a brand-new effort, their fifth album titled RUSHMERE. Rushmere is the spot where Mumford & Sons first met in Wimbledon, and this album marks the beginning of the group’s next phase — after an intense period of creativity for the trio.
(RUSHMERE was produced in collaboration with the nine-time Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb.)

The talents will be out west as part as a 30-plus-city tour across North America, and for this show — at one of the most scenic venues in the country — they’ll be joined by Japanese Breakfast.

On August 1 Caamp returns to Tacoma — on the second leg of their first tour in three years — at Dune Peninsula. We first fell in love with the uniquely folksy group a few years back at Pickathon (a dreamy music fest happening again this year from July 31 to August 3), and the mesmerizing group has now released its fifth studio album, Copper Changes Color, via Mom+Pop. Produced after a period of “rest and healing” that found Caamp’s frontman and co-founder Taylor Meier splitting time between his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and NYC, the 11-track album has been deemed the band’s most adventurous yet, as a reflection on growth and evolution.

Also on August 1, Dispatch plays Marymoor as part of an extensive tour featuring John Butler (with band), G. Love & Special Sauce, Donavon Frankenreiter (and Illiterate Light for some shows). They’ll be playing music from their new album Yellow Jacket, which finds the band shifting back toward their reggae/ska roots.

For a completely different (modern) sound, check out Jay Som – the project of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Melina Duterte –who will be joining Lucy Dacus on tour for several dates, including a stop at Carnation’s Remlinger Farms August 10. Duterte just announced that her first new album in more than six years, “Belong,” come out October 10 via Polyvinyl. We’ve been really enjoying giving this artist a listen after learning: “The new record follows her critically acclaimed sophomore album Anak Ko in 2019 as well as producing credits on the GRAMMY-winning Boygenius album the record, Lucy Dacus’ latest Forever Is A Feeling and collaborations with the likes of Troye Sivan and beabadoobee with No Rome and more.”

And now to time travel again…Speaking of beloved throwbacks, in a summer when British rock icons Bush are set to release their 10th studio album, “I Beat Loneliness” (July 18), they’ll also stop by Climate Pledge Arena August 8. The GRAMMY®-nominated, multi-Platinum rockers kick off their North American tour at the TD Garden in Boston on July 19 and wrap it up in Memphis on August 30.

Bush continues to influence the rock landscape near and far, boasting impressive stats like over 24 million albums sold, 1 billion-plus streams and iconic hits like “Glycerine” and “Swallowed.” Produced by Gavin Rossdale and Erik Ron (of Panic! At The Disco), the newest album features 12 tracks that explore “heartbreak, identity and the emotional battles often left unspoken.”

Beloved local indie talents The Head and the Heart come home to T-Mobile Park with The Lumineers on August 16. The city’s incredibly excited to welcome the band back in the midst of their Aperture Tour to celebrate the group’s brand-new album, which has received some rave reviews.

On Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1, GRAMMY-nominated rock band Goo Goo Dolls bring their Summer Anthem Tour through town, playing Chateau Ste. Michelle alongside Dashboard Confessional. Most recently, the band performed global hit “Iris” on the season finale of American Idol. The four-time GRAMMY-nominated track is now Certified Diamond, and has reached a peak of more than 4.4 billion streams worldwide.

And to round out a summer of electrifying music, consider catching HAIM at WAMU September 18. The captivating sister trio has received many kudos for their new album, “I Quit,” released on June 20 via Columbia Records. It’s their first album in five years, and well worth a listen.

Even if you can’t make all these shows, we can vouch for many of these new albums providing ideal roadtrip sing-along material. Think windows down, volume up. Happy listening!
