In this edition of Dog Days, we seek the answer to the common question, ‘Is it safe to leave your dog in a parked car in the summer?’ I know my dog would much rather sit in the car than at home by herself, but this option can be deadly! Even though this summer has been relatively mild, especially compared to last summer, even a temperature as low as 72 degrees can be dangerous! The forecast for the rest of the week predicts high 70’s.

The Eastside, particularly Bellevue, has a reputation and it’s not a positive one. Many people think of the Eastside as being cultureless with cookie-cutter chain restaurants and snobby, materialistic people driving Range Rovers and Teslas. However, while it may be true in a small way, that isn’t an entirely accurate or fair description. There’s so much more to the Eastside—don’t let a few stereotypes stop you from visiting! There are several great spots that Seattleites should consider crossing the bridge for (and a few places to avoid), you just need a little “In the Know”.

A glass act: Visiting our artsy neighbors to the south.

Just 35 miles south of Seattle, there’s an old railroad town where public art thrives, waterfront property reigns and the architectural landscape vacillates between gritty industrial and grand Victorian. Compared to Seattle (especially these days), the pace there feels significantly slower, the streets emptier, the buildings lower. (One welcomed difference? Empty parking spaces abound!)

One of the many things this Misplaced Texan misses from the Lone Star State is some good ol’ barbeque. So it is no wonder that when I caught the smell of barbeque wafting through the air in my neighborhood, I followed it like a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon when he is physically compelled to float in midair toward a delicious meal.  Then I saw it: a tiny log cabin of a trailer known as the “Campfire Chuck Wagon” parked adjacent to Lower Queen Anne’s Citizen Café and Bar on the corner of Taylor Avenue North and Roy Street, just north of Mercer Street.

Of course we all know what a fantastic destination we live in, but now two local filmmakers want to ensure that the rest of the world gets in on the secret, too. In their community-funded short film “We Make Seattle,” Scott Berkun and Bryan Zug highlight why our beautiful city proves an ideal home for creative workers and entrepreneurs. 

Making volunteering fun and accessible for Seattleites.

Seattle is booming. Census data shows that Seattle is one of the fastest growing major American cities with a high concentration of young adults. Millennials make up 1/3 of our population. What will Seattle look like if we don’t value community engagement and volunteerism in this time of growth? How do we get millennials involved in building a thriving community of actively engaged individuals? This is where Seattle Works comes in.

Hot new restaurants that should be on your radar this spring.

I’ve been eating my way around Seattle and these are my favorites right now. Bar Melusine in Capitol Hill, Girin in Pioneer Square, and Salare in Ravenna need to be at the top of your restaurant list. They opened within the last year and they are doing things right. Each offers a different cuisine, and all of them have tasty, flavorful food, wonderful service, and a beautiful space.
