Beehive Bakery Opens In The Central District

This neighborhood bakery is serving up some sweet, savory and Kosher treats.

The wait is over for Central District residents who have long anticipated the opening of a bakery in their neighborhood. Beehive Bakery opened earlier this month at the location that formerly housed Philly’s Best on 23rd Avenue and Union Street.

Beehive Bakery’s owner, Jane, is optimistic for her store’s future. While she is still in the process of unpacking boxes and setting up tables inside the bakery, her positive attitude shows through in her eagerness to please customers. She is looking forward to the bakery’s grand opening on Sunday, Sep. 25, at which time she hopes to have the inside set up for customers to relax and enjoy a freshly baked pastry.

Offering both sweet and savory goods, Beehive Bakery also serves espresso drinks and coffee by locally-based Caffé D’arte. Beehive specializes in cinnamon rolls, of which there are four different kinds: frosted with and without raisins, orange cream and caramelized walnut.

The current menu also includes scones, muffins, quiche, cookies and a few different types of bread, but Jane says that she will be adding more options after the grand opening. An added bonus for many area residents is that Beehive Bakery is certified kosher.

Future plans for Beehive Bakery seem limitless. “I would love to tiptoe into soup,” Jane said of her desire to serve more items. She would also someday like to offer gluten-free pastries.

The building’s drive-through window will not function as such because there is a bus stop located too close, but Jane hopes to move some tables and chairs into the drive-through lane so that people can sit under the covered area as they sip their lattes.

Current hours for Beehive Bakery are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. — though Jane expects these times to change after the grand opening in September.

So, whether you’re looking to satisfy a sweet tooth, get your caffeine fix or just have a friendly conversation, Jane and Beehive Bakery are awaiting your visit.
