The Scoop: The punctuation error in dianne’s Delights is intentional. Owner Dianne Dodson wanted to emphasize the guilty culinary pleasures she brings to her customers, rather than her name. dD’s is a dessert-only catering company that serves dainty delicacies to the greater Puget Sound area.

Dodson boasts to be a “local gal” who matched up her two true passions in life — desserts and people. Her sweet shop suits all sorts of cravings, gifts and decadent desires — from corporate and private parties to anniversaries and birthdays. dianne’s Delights specializes in cookies, cupcakes and cake balls, from the saccharine to the savory.

Crave Factor: Dodson’s claim to recent fame has been her cake balls, also coyly coined as “crack balls” at a recent event she catered. Without tangling the situation, she stabs each stick in a ball of cake and calls it good. Granted, a few minor details might have been skipped — but the overall experience is in the eating.

These cake balls have taken off as the go-to treat for both at-home cooks and professional bakers. As Dodson knows, the secret to any good cake is balance — which can be thrown off if the correct proportion of cake to frosting is not achieved. No one wants an imbalanced cake.

The ingeniousness of a cake ball is all solved in the portion size. With just one bite, these delicious morsels combine delectable coating with rich interior — and the result is perfect harmony. Depending on the level of splurge, a dozen golfball-sized cake bites are available for $30, while 12 minis are available for $21.

Fun Fact: In July of 2010, Dodson was asked by a good friend to cater a dessert-only event for 3,000 people. Her renderings were a big hit and, within two months, she started her own dessert catering business.
