Grub Alert: “Taste of Thanksgiving”

Start the festive season at Whole Foods with this health-conscious tasting event.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, Whole Foods would like to give thanks to the sense of taste. From 5 to 8 p.m., all five Whole Foods locations in the Seattle area will host a public tasting event to showcase many, many reasons to be gracious this holiday season.

Taste of Thanksgiving (TOT) will reveal Whole Foods’ finest natural, local and organic grub for the season. There is a suggested donation of $5, with all proceeds going to Solid Ground, a foundation that strives to end poverty in our community.

Hand-selected by Seattle Whole Foods’ team of foragers — including blogger Denise Breyley, (“The Local Forager”) — TOT’s distinctive, seasonal products will be divided into two categories: traditional and “Health Starts Here.” The latter is based on the “four pillars of healthy eating,” spearheaded by Whole Foods CEO John Mackey: consumption of whole foods, servings that are plant-strong (fruit/vegetable, legume and whole grain-focused), a consistent intake of healthy fats and meals that are dense in nutrients.

The items below (listed with key ingredients) are just a taste of what Thursday’s event has to offer. Shoppers are also urged to check out the Top 10 Holiday Wine List at each location, provided by the knowledgeable cork dorks that run the beverage departments.

Turkey

  • Holiday Roasted Turkey

Mashed potatoes

  • Traditional: potatoes, milk, butter, sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper
  • Health Starts Here: potatoes, cashew cream, salt

Stuffing

  • Traditional: bread, water, onion,  vegan chicken broth, rice starch, sea salt, parsley, sage, pepper, canola oil, soybean oil, thyme, rosemary
  • Health Starts Here Mushroom and Rice Stuffing: wild rice, brown rice, barley, mushrooms, scallions, onions, vegetable broth, garlic, red wine, tamari, nutritional yeast, thyme, rosemary, pepper

Cranberry Sauce

  • Regular: cranberries, sugar, orange zest, orange juice

Gravy

  • Vegan Mushroom Gravy: onion, vegetarian beef broth powder, water, garlic, crimini mushrooms, red wine, thyme, rosemary, low sodium tamari, arrowroot, nutritional yeast, pepper.

Salad

  • Sliced comice pears, organic spring mix, crushed walnuts, crumbled blue cheese (vegan version without cheese), balsamic vinaigrette
