The Spot: Chef/Owner Davinder Kohli aims to make a statement when you enter his quaint Indian restaurant. You’re immediately engulfed by intricate wall carvings, multi-colored ceiling panels, and Hindu deities. Roti’s bold, traditional flavors of North India pair well with the ambience. Spices are ground daily on the premises and their clay oven yields smoky tandoor delicacies.

The Dish: Indian cuisine consists of an almost unlimited range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. It should come as no surprise then that Roti’s menu boasts an impressive 75 items. What is surprising is that one of their best dishes, and arguably one of the best Indian dishes in Seattle, is actually a rather simple item. Their Dal Makhni is simply amazing. Dal refers to Indian lentils, a protein-rich staple that is an important part of traditionally vegetarian meals. Of course, any health benefits are perhaps outweighed by the dish’s other key ingredient, makhan (butter). The flavor is more than worth it and if you can handle heat, order it with some spice. When you dip the naan into the rich, creamy sauce you’ll understand once again that it’s the simple dishes that always capture your taste buds.
