Q Nightclub, located at 1426 Broadway on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, opened this past Saturday, September 8. With talented resident DJs, electronic dance beats playing into the wee hours of the morning, an impressive sound system, and an expansive dance floor, Q is poised to be a hot spot for Seattleites.

Opening night featured DJs Quentin Harris and Little Rock taking turns in the booth throughout the night. DJ Quentin Harris hails from NYC and encompasses every niche of electronic dance music; DJ Little Rock creates sexy beats as an underground club staple. While some kinks will need to be worked out — they ran out of glass cups and resorted to plastic Dixie cups, service was enthusiastic, but clunky, and much of the dance floor was substantially sticky, Q has potential.

Q features a custom sound system from UK sound system pioneers Funktion One, lighting design by SJ Lighting, and an interior by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson built by Dovetail. Walking down the dramatically long entry hall, it foreshadows the aesthetic experience of the club. The feel is unlike any other in Seattle.

Each of the bars and lounges inside each have a distinct identity. The main bar is an asymmetrical island faced with vertical shingle-style metal panels and topped by a curving slab of white quartzite over 70 feet long. Overhead, custom light fixtures of suspended metal rods with illuminated tips form a glowing halo around the bar’s perimeter.

In the smaller, more intimate “Bourbon Bar,” rich walnut wood panels wrap around the face of a blackened steel counter, forming a backdrop for vintage fiberglass seating by Charles and Ray Eames. A custom banquette hung from a curvilinear soffit provides comfortable lounge seating away from the main dance floor.

Serpentine walls and multi-level platforms that accommodate lounge seating, dancing surfaces, and drink rails encircle the dance floor. The DJ booth anchors the west end of the space and is designed as a series of platforms that seem to rise out of the dance floor. The existing over 18 foot ceiling height allowed for the insertion of an intimate mezzanine lounge, with all red finishes.

Co-Owner, Scott Smith says, “we want to go back to the basics of what a club is supposed to be about – the best music and DJs on the planet, impeccable and incredibly polite service, stunning interior design and lighting, and a world renowned sound system.” Overall, this club provides a unique music style and atmosphere that is sure to keep the buzz.
