Grub Alert: U:Don Fresh Japanese Noodle Station

Quick and delicious Japanese noodle station.

In this edition of Food Porn, we feature U:Don, located in the heart of University Ave, this restaurant provides a unique udon experience unmatched in Seattle. The udon noodles are freshly made in-house as well as all of their soups and sauces. Chef and owner, Tak Kurachi makes the noodles in the Sanuki-style, characterized by broad, thick noodles with a chewy texture. The Sanuki Province is located on the island of Shikoku in Japan.

You pick your favorite noodle, chilled or hot, add your favorite toppings and sides, and pick a drink and dessert to finish your meal. You go up to the counter to order and pay and receive your noodles immediately. Then you can peruse the Self-Serve Tempura Bar that includes shrimp, vegetables (broccoli, sweet potato, lotus root, and more!), and my favorite — Takoyaki (ball-shaped snack filled with chopped octopus). Other side dishes include Spam Musubi, Onigiri, Asuzuke Pickles, and Seaweed Salad.

On to the noodles! When you walk in, you will see fresh noodles in the kitchen ready to be boiled. On-tama Udon can be served hot or chilled and is lightly dressed with dashi-shoyu, a soft-boiled egg, sliced green onions and freshly grated ginger. The Kitsune Udon is served hot with fried and mariated tofu. The Zaru Goma Udon is the summer special – and our favorite – served cold with a sesame and chili oil dipping sauce. Make sure to try this one! If you’re looking for something spicy, the Tan-Tan Udon is topped with ground pork and jalapenos and chili oil. Order at your own risk – you can’t return it if it’s too spicy!

A fun and casual atmosphere that is great for college students, families, or anyone seeking a quick and filling, yet reasonably priced meal. Definitely check it out!

Open Monday through Thursday and Sunday from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm and Friday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm.
