In 2011, two busy moms started Acme Farms + Kitchen to make accessing local food easier. They realized that buying seasonal, local food changed the way we were cooking and eating, but we needed guidance on how to prepare them. The Locavore Box provides an array of delicious, fresh vegetables and cuts of meat along with recipes, meal plans, and kitchen tips. A “locavore” is a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market (often within 100 miles).

LOCAVORE BOXES:

  • Locavore Box: seasonal produce, a meat selection, fish or shellfish, and an assortment of bread, cheese, fresh pasta, eggs and dairy*
  • Paleo Box: meat, fish, and produce
  • Basics Box: a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread [something for toast or sandwiches], seasonal fruit and a dairy item
  • Salad Kit: variety of produce and salad dressing and possibly beans, grains, nuts, seeds and cheese

*They offer dairy-free, gluten-free, or dairy/gluten-free options

THE PROCESS: Order online each week and have a beautiful box of local food delivered to your doorstep. You’ll cut out trips to the store, save money on your grocery bill, answer the question of “what’s for dinner?” and most importantly, support dozens of farmers, fishers, ranchers, and artisan producers throughout our region.

OUR EXPERIENCE:

I’ve ordered produce boxes in the past, but have often cooked new items incorrectly or was too afraid to use them and they went to waste. Using the recipes included in this Locavore box, I was able to try new cooking techniques (ie. marinating meat in yogurt, spinach instead of basil for pesto) and also ingredients I hadn’t used before. I often make pulled pork, but never beef brisket and have never thought about making pesto out of spinach and walnuts.

I’ve never met a quiche I liked, so I opted out of making the Quiche Lorraine. Instead, I used the pie crust to make sweet pies and used the farm-fresh eggs, orange pepper, and potatoes for poached eggs and potato, pepper hash. These five dishes made several servings of food for the week (the large box is intended for at least 5 meals). The items were fresh, quality ingredients and labeled with which farm it came from. What you put into your body greatly affects how you feel and I felt healthy and energetic all week. I loved the box, slowing down to make time to cook, and would highly recommend it.
