Even though Halloween weekend’s just around the bend, it’s not too late to book a memorable adventure that’s only a short flight, ferry ride or road trip away. Whether you’re looking to get spooked or pampered, we’ve rounded up a few ways to celebrate the holiday in style.

HOOD CANAL, WASHINGTON

Low on the fright-meter, high on the delight-meter. It’s not too late to plan to scoot on down to Hood Canal’s Alderbook Resort & Spa, which honors the harvest season with CiderHood—a celebration of all things local, seasonal and delicious. On Friday, October 28th, Executive Chef Josh Delgado presents pairings of locally made ciders (like Finnriver and Tieton Cider Works) with a 5-course dinner that showcases delicacies from quail and Washington duck to Hood Canal oysters and Oakland Bay mussels. On Saturday, October 29th, from noon to 4 p.m., sip cider from 15 Washington and Oregon cideries while savoring locally gathered culinary treats from the region including paella, Hood Canal salmon, Skokomish Valley produce, Hama Hama oysters and more. SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO

Feeling adventurous and over this Northwest rain? Head south to La Posada de Santa Fe, a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa for the ultimate dreamy getaway. This artful gem in the nation’s oldest capital city features a warm, welcoming vibe and authentic adobe-style architecture. None of the 157 guestrooms, decorated in alluring Southwestern style, have been designed exactly the same; many have a fireplace, too—either traditional or “Kiva” style, which were first used in sacred underground chambers of the Pueblo Indians in the 8th century.

Coincidentally, Halloween happens to be the perfect time to visit this New Mexico hot spot, thanks to the property’s friendly resident phantom. Julia—the ghost of Julia Staab, who resided at the property in the 1800s—still calls the venue home. Two of the hotel’s restaurants pay homage to their longtime tenant (Julia, a Spirited Restaurant & Bar and The Staab House), and the resort’s signature cocktail carries her name, too. In fact, the tasty Juliarita Margarita features ingredients made from apricots that still grow on a tree Julia planted in the 1880s.

Over the years, plenty of guests have had the pleasure of encountering Julia, who’s always spotted at the top of the grand staircase in the inn’s main complex and described as wearing a dark flowing gown and hood. Those who knew her in the late 1800s said that Julia had a bubbly personality and loved to entertain, but sadly fell into a deep depression over the loss of a child and other unsuccessful pregnancies. Allegedly, she retreated to her bedroom until her death at age 52.

Julia’s spirit has been featured on local ghost tours, as well as TV shows like “Unsolved Mysteries” and “Weird Travels.” Guests need not worry, though; she’s always nice to those she bumps into!

VICTORIA, BC

If you feel like using your passport, hop on a Clipper ferry to explore “the most haunted city in Canada.” Once you’ve docked in Victoria, celebrate Halloween in countless entertaining, frightening and delicious ways. For example, go on a self-guided tour of the city’s many spooky sites, or join guided tours that tell of bloody murders and eerie ghost ships. Join the escape room craze for a fun interactive challenge, or party like a local at an October 28th outdoor film screening at Phillips Brewing & Malting Company.
