Grab your friends and family and head out to picturesque Friday Harbor for Fall hikes, beer festivals, and more

There’s nothing quite like Fall in the PNW – beautiful bright foliage, crisp morning air, and everything pumpkin spice (yes, all drinks and treats beyond Starbuck’s PSL are delish!). It’s my favorite time of year to get outside in Seattle, but it’s also a wonderful time to get out of the city, go offline, and spend some time out in nature.
The San Juan Islands are often crowded with tourists in the summer so I like to skip the crowds and spend a Fall weekend immersing myself in the slower-paced island life. In this post, find out why you should pack your bags and spend a weekend partaking in the fun events offered on San Juan Island this season.
WHAT TO DO
Hit the trails
In my opinion, the best way to see the most beautiful autumn foliage on the island is to get your blood pumping and head out on a hike. Whether you walk along the Roche Harbor trail waterfront or gain elevation and perspective by climbing Young Hill, you will be rewarded with vibrant red, orange, and yellow changing colors all along the way.
Oktoberfest
Most Seattleites know about the beer stein toting festivities in Leavenworth and Fremont, but this year the San Juan Island Brewery is hosting their very own celebration in Friday Harbor. The all-day event includes a yummy German-themed food menu, live music from local musicians, costume contests, games, and other activities for all ages. Plus, they’re pouring 12 different beers that are hand-crafted in-house. If they still have the Fresh Hop Lager, it’s a must try. Prost!
Friday Harbor Film Festival October 26-28th

Did you know San Juan Island hosts their own film festival? The annual Friday Harbor Film Festival takes place the last weekend in October and will feature award-winning documentary films, premieres and special events, and Q&A opportunities to chat with the filmmakers. All venues are within walking distance of the Ferry landing, and you can purchase your ticket and see the full lineup of exciting films on display here.
WHERE TO STAY

The quaint Earthbox Inn & Spa is conveniently located in the heart of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island just 4 blocks from the ferry landing. It’s walking distance to all of the best shops and restaurants (including San Juan Island Brewery and all film festival venues!), and guests have access to use free bike cruisers to pedal around town. You can wind down by taking a dip in the indoor heated pool and jacuzzi or book a relaxing massage or body treatment at the onsite Spa at Earthbox. The rooms are perfect for couples and families, and they also offer pet-friendly accommodations so you can bring your furry friends along to join in your weekend wanderings.
