It’s no secret that we adore Pickathon—a magical weekend gathering on an Oregon farm that’s all about the discovery of phenomenal new artists in beautiful and unique spaces (think intimate barns and fantastical stages that blend into the surrounding woods). If we squint past the dizzying haze of gray, we finally see summer approaching, and we are so stinkin’ ready to welcome it with wide-open, sun-deprived arms. You too? Before we even get there, though, there’s an intriguing lineup of events that has our curiosity piqued. Pull out your iCalendar; it’s time to get plotting.
The wooded campsites and dusty trails of Pendarvis Farm might have felt a wee bit more packed this year, but who can blame the brand-new converts for joining Pickathon’s crew of longtime, loyal fans? When word gets out about a really, really good thing, it turns out—people listen.
Summer has begun to accelerate at lightning speed, and we suddenly feel that it’s prime time to soak up every sun-kissed moment of the season. If you’re with us, we’d love to strongly urge you—music lovers in particular—to make a really smart move to further enhance your summer. This gem of a gathering will forever raise your festival-going bar, and that’s not a promise we make lightly.

If you’ve not yet seen Shakey Graves live, that’s something you’ll want to fix. We’d recommend you clear your schedule for this Sunday evening to catch the mesmerizing and enigmatic performer, who made a name for himself early on as Austin’s best one-man band. This weekend, his much buzzed-about Die Hard Tour—one that features him with a backing band—enlivens the stage at downtown’s Moore Theatre (with Tennis as the opener).
Before the season slips away—and we admit it’s suddenly sneakily picking up its gait—we’d like to add a few “musts” to your PNW playlist. From musical gatherings to tranquil getaways, these ideas might just add a bit more magic to your already rockin’ summer.

After year two of attending the Pickathon music festival in Happy Valley, Oregon, I know this much to be true:
Seattle (and the entire NW) amps up for a high-volume season.
Seattelites love to rock out all year-round, but when we’re finally blessed with never-ending azure days, we crank it up even harder. This summer’s music options include the obvious gems like Capitol Hill Block Party (July 25-27) and Bumbershoot (August 30-September 1), and we’re impressed once again with these events’ lineups that continue to “wow.”

After my interview with Pickathon founder Zale Schoenborn, I had the strong suspicion I had serendipitously stumbled upon something pretty darn special. But I still had very little idea what to expect as my friends and I pulled into Happy Valley’s Pendarvis Farm two Thursdays ago, dust kicking up behind us into the gray Oregon sky.
