Metromint Water: Refreshingly Sweet

Seattleite‘s Jessica Wyrick raves after taste-testing this delicious new beverage.

The excitement builds as you grab the sleek bottle, twist open the cap and take the first sip. A wake up alarm for your taste buds, the liquid hits you with a hint of chocolate followed by a cool blast of mint. It is like biting into a satisfying thin mint cookie — yet there is no guilt.

This is ChocolateMint, one of the varieties of Metromint Water. A product of San Francisco-based Soma Beverage Company LLC, Metromint was co-founded in 2004 by husband-wife team Scott Lowe and Rio Miura. One of the top 10-selling premium bottled water labels on the natural foods market, this tasty drink is made from pure water and pesticide-free, 100% real mint that has been grown in Washington state. Through the process of reverse-osmosis and a double distillation of the mint leaves, the company is able to create a purely refreshing beverage — one that contains not a single calorie nor any artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors.

Seven Metromint varieties are found in stores. In addition to the peppermint and spearmint standards, minty flavors imbued with orange, lemon, cherry, goodberry (a fusion of raspberry, pomegranate and acai) — and of course, chocolate — are also available. The packaging is also easy on the eyes, as each flavor is denoted by a color-coded sequence of dots — meant to convey the scientific complexity behind this seemingly simple beverage.

As an avid chocolate connoisseur, I believe there is nothing quite like biting into a delectable piece of chocolate. However, if I close my eyes while sipping this bottled treat, I can almost taste the original cacao beans from Madagascar. Well— maybe not that specific, but if I were stranded in the desert with three wishes, one of them would (now) be for a ChocolateMint water.
