If a little alpine flair is what you seek, then there’s no need to book a flight to Europe. Fortunately for Seattleites, the lovely German village of Leavenworth lies just a few hours away in the Cascade range of Central Washington.
This picturesque community allows premier access to some of the best hiking, biking and rock climbing in the Evergreen State — and then rewards its guests with an authentic German meal of bratwurst, sauerkraut and weißbier at the end of the day.

Visitors to this lovely town are welcome to stay at the Bavarian Lodge, which has been open since 2005. Inspired by the timeless architecture of rural Germany, the lodge offers luxurious amenities while maintaining the cozy atmosphere of a rustic country inn. Some of the perks include an outdoor heated pool and a pair of hot tubs, full breakfast buffet and complimentary DVD library.
Several room sizes are available. For high rollers, the Turret Suite offers spectacular views of downtown Leavenworth, a jetted spa with seating area, crackling fireplace and spacious Jacuzzi with terricloth robes. Smaller accommodations include a corner room (with a fireplace and king-size bed), as well as standard double queen and king rooms.

As nice as the lodgings are, you’ll probably want to get out and stretch your feet. Conveniently, Bavarian Lodge is located in the heart of downtown Leavenworth. Window shoppers will get their fill with the large number of quaint storefronts, while tourists can enjoy attractions such as the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum and the Wood Carver Gallery.
When the sun goes down, night owls can choose from more than a dozen fine German restaurants and taverns — many of which feature nightly live music during the summer months.
Some of the options available to outdoorsy folks include five first-rate golf courses and country clubs, a network of mountain bike trails, fishing on the Wenatchee River and hiking in the Enchantments. There are many outdoor shops and boutiques in Leavenworth, as well — so be sure to get some insider tips from local employees as you stock up on gear and supplies.
