SeafoodFest: Celebrate Seattle’s Scandinavian Heritage

Grab your Viking helmet and head to Ballard to enjoy great food and entertainment.

Seattleites are well known for drinking coffee and enjoying the outdoors, but something else we Northwesterners love is our seafood. This weekend, the Ballard Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating its 37th annual SeafoodFest in Seattle’s historically Scandinavian neighborhood.

With entertainment for all ages, everyone will find something to enjoy at this uniquely Seattle festival. Some of the special attractions to check out this year include the Lutefisk Eating Contest, a traditional salmon barbecue and street entertainers such as Seattle icon Stan Boreson. Viking helmets will be worn in all different styles and colors, and Ballard’s own Maritime Pacific Brewing Company will be on hand to serve frothy pints to thirsty attendees.

Additionally, those affected by the less-than-stellar economy might be interested in the Recession Raffle. Sponsored by the Salmon Bay Eagles and the Ballard Chamber of Commerce, this drawing will award a grand prize of $2,000 to one lucky winner.

Adults will be able to enjoy La Señoritas Beer Garden and Salmon Bay Eagles Wine Garden to pair drinks with delectable seafood dishes. Likewise, kids can expect to see Fin, the 25-foot Migrating Salmon, back for another year to teach them about his species’ amazing life cycle. The Big Purple Slide, which will be located in front of the library, is making its first appearance this year.

Festival organizers ensure this festival is accessible to all members of the family — including the four-legged ones. Pets are welcome — indeed, encouraged — to attend this weekend’s events.

There will be no shortage of entertainers this year. Two separate stages will be hosting events — one for children and one for adults. All entertainment is free, so you and your family can enjoy it from the beer and wine gardens or on the lawn. Plan ahead and check out the lineups for the main stage and the family stage, as well as the many arts and crafts and food vendors that will be present.

SeafoodFest 2011 will be held Saturday, July 9 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, July 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
