What’s Hot: South Lake Union Block Party

Get some grub and enjoy the sunshine at the South Lake Union Block Party.  Proceeds from this year’s South Lake Union Block Party benefit Plymouth Housing Group, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing permanent, stable housing for the homeless.

Food booths offer pizza, hot dogs, Thai food, pasta, sandwiches, and more.  Feeling like you need an animal companion in your life?  Not to worry, the Seattle Humane Society’s MaxMobile, an on-the-spot adoption bus, will be making an appearance.

For the kids: carnival games, bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, mini-golf, air hockey, and an area where you can make your own wooden boat.  Not for the kids: the Brave Horse Tavern Beer Garden, featuring regional handcrafted beers from Deschutes Brewery, Georgetown Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Lazy Boy Brewing, and Snoqualmie Brewery.  Also not for kids: an outdoor movie screening of Dazed and Confused (rated R) at 9 p.m.

Don’t miss one of the highlights: the “Best Burger in SLU” Grilling Competition. Defending champion Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar will face off against Blue Moon Burgers, Brave Horse Tavern, Lunchbox Laboratory, and Whole Foods Market.  There will be awards given for “Best Burger in SLU” judges’ choice and “Best Burger in SLU” people’s choice, so make sure to sample some sliders and cast your vote.

When: Noon to 11 p.m. Friday, August 10

Where: Southlake Lake Union Discovery Center (Denny Way and Westlake Ave N., Seattle)

How much: Entrance is free.   Tickets to the burger grilling competition are $10, food tickets are $1 each; proceeds benefit Plymouth Housing Group.
