Food Porn: Chop Shop Cafe & Bar

A dinner made of small plates & vegetables.

In this edition of Food Porn, we feature Chop Shop Cafe & Bar located in the heart of Capitol Hill, right off 11th in the brand new Chop Shop Row. The menu includes lots of seasonal products, a full bar and a vibrant cocktail menu. We opted for small plates and vegetables to share. Four dishes was enough to satisfy both of us. The dishes were made of fresh ingredients and it was a great late-summer meal. However, next time we stop in, we will order the highly recommended signature ‘Double Pork Chop’ and Grilled Octopus.

Pork Shoulder.

Pork Shoulder with kimchi-style napa cabbage, sweet corn, almonds, and coriander broth. The acidity of the pickled cabbage complimented the rich, fatty pork. It was fork-tender in a hearty and flavorful broth. Hen of the Woods with fava beans, pancetta, mustard greens, a sunny-side egg, and mushrooms. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yolk and the mushrooms were unctuous and buttery—some of the best I’ve had. The pancetta wasn’t as crispy as I would have liked, but overall, a very tasty dish.

Purple Kholrabi with greens, fresno chile, basil, and crushed peanuts is a fresh and light appetizer. The Melon Gazpacho with kaffir lime panna cotta, padron pepper, arbequina olive oil, and verbena was delicious. The balance of the dish was fantastic with creamy, tangy, sweet, and spicy notes. I don’t often order gazpachos, but I would definitely get this again.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Definitely order the Pork Shoulder, Hen in the Woods, and the Melon Gazpacho.
