We’ve heard good things about Freshly—how the meals are convenient, delicious, and are delivered straight to your door. The meals are fully cooked and all of them are gluten-free. The meals come ready-to-eat and just need to be heated for four minutes or less in the microwave. We decided to try it for a week to see for ourselves.
THE MEALS
There are 30 different meals to choose from, all gluten-free and many dairy-free as well. All the meals are prepared and cooked by chefs and delivered fresh—never frozen. They come in microwave-safe trays with a plastic film covering them. The directions indicate to pierce the corners with a fork, microwave for 2-4 minutes, then let stand for 2 minutes. Honestly, microwaving the plastic tray and film made me feel really uncomfortable and then peeling it off (even with the help of a knife) was very difficult each time.
- Sicilian-Style Chicken Parm
- Spaghetti Squash & Meatballs
- Sausage & Peppers
- Denver Omelette
- Slow Cooked Beef Chili
- BBQ Chicken
The proteins were surprisingly moist for a microwavable meal. As a whole, the dishes were bland and didn’t leave me feeling satisfied. None of it was exciting or interesting food to eat. There are many other options I’d choose over ordering Freshly again, including meal kits, takeout, and hot bar food at Whole Foods.
PRICING
Overall, I see why this many people like Freshly. They offer healthy meals without preservatives ready to go for lunch and dinners for the week. If you order at least 6 meals, it’s more affordable than ordering takeout. If you’re looking to save time (aren’t we all?) it’s ~4-6 minutes until your meal is ready to eat rather than 30-60 minutes if you’re cooking a homemade meal.
