Based in Washington, Acme Farms & Kitchens provides a curated grocery experience with farm-fresh meal kits for everyone (including vegan and gluten-free options!) and everyday grocery items that come from local farmers and producers. Some of their partners include Rachel’s Ginger Beer, Theo Chocolate and Farmstand Local Foods. Now is the perfect time to check it out with summer produce in full swing!
We spoke with co-CEOs Joy Rubey and Jeff Bos about their mission and what makes Acme stand apart from similar companies. Jeff emphasized their focus on “building local food hubs that support local food resiliency” and while Acme hadn’t been on our radar recently, it was founded ten years ago, a pioneer in both the importance of building local food systems as well as curated meal kits.
Acme is a different kind of meal delivery service, committed to the health of the community, its people and the planet, and making good food accessible to everyone:
- You get to truly enjoy the freshness of “fresh”—you’ll receive your box on the same day it was packed! They deliver from Bellingham all the way down the I-5 corridor as far south as Portland.
- Building a local food system —one that works for both producers as well as customers. By partnering with regional farmers, makers and bakers (more than 230 to date!) to drive their sales and moving local food fewer miles for personal delivery.
- Offering seasonally curated and customizable meal kits and marketplace products for customers to shop and support local with ease, all catering to a variety of choices for different diets (vegans and vegetarians will love it!), with a goal to make nutritious meals easy and affordable. Farmers Markets are mainly on the weekends, but ordering from Acme allows you to support local farmers, ranchers, makers, and bakers all week long, year round.
- Quick turnaround and reducing waste and carbon footprint—order by Wednesday at midnight to get your order delivered the following Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Keeping food closer to where it’s grown and prepared reduces the impact to the environment with less transportation. Weekly orders ensures everything grown gets eaten with minimal packaging (just one-third of the materials used by most meal kit delivery services), plus they offer a pick-up option for reuse. This was immediately noticeable in our order with more recyclable materials and less individual use thin plastics!

Acme is on a mission to sell $2 billion in local, organic food, delivering a positive impact in our communities, and the many small businesses that supply us and the environment. Through customer donations and reduced margins, Acme moves more local food and makes it more accessible through non-profit partnerships who deliver Acme Boxes to homeless youth and migrant farmworkers. This summer, they’re featuring getaway-themed boxes including the Glamping Getaway Box, the Family Campout Getaway Box, and the Beach House Getaway Box. Each box contains several meals with all the ingredients necessary and recipe cards to make delicious food without the time and energy of researching recipes and grocery shopping.
