Weekend Wanderlust: A Kirkland Staycation at The Woodmark

A half-moon hung over Lake Washington on the evening we were lucky enough to take a pause at Kirkland’s The Woodmark Hotel & Still Spa, after a particularly hectic week. Back on the balcony post-dinner, warmed with wine, a delicious Beach Cafe dinner and fulfilling conversation, I realized I was already breathing easier than when I had arrived a few hours earlier.

Soaking in a passionate sunset that split the horizon above the Seattle skyline, I remembered for the umpteenth time that you truly don’t have to travel far from home to find a total reset.

Some of our favorite aspects of this waterfront stay include: a comfortable room with soothing hues, Keurig machine and dreamy, small balcony, plus lake views and lapping wave sounds that make you feel far removed from it all. Then there are amenities like Raid the Pantry, a fun perk that begins at 10 p.m. nightly, allowing guests to pick and choose between a bounty of snacks neatly displayed in a walk-in lobby closet.

While nearby downtown Kirkland (easily accessed via walking or biking paths) offers plenty of draws like more dining, shopping, wine tasting and gallery glimpsing, the hotel’s home at Carillon Point is a destination on its own. The hotel’s outdoor activity partner, Waterfront Adventures, offers boat, SUP and kayak rentals. (Hotel guests enjoy free kayak use.) Surrounding patios bustle with European vibes and happy diners who’ve posted up at Le Grand Bistro and Como.

Be sure not to miss dinner at Beach Cafe, a fine-dining venue that features sensational waterside views and friendly service at alfresco tables. Some standout dishes: chili-crusted jumbo prawns, crispy calamari with spicy lemon aioli and ginger shoyu, seared wild scallops, plus specials like coveted king salmon (served two different ways—atop a Caesar or with potatoes and broccolini).

In the morning, you’ll want to head across the plaza to Carillon Kitchen, where “healthy and homemade” is the name of the game. Try the avocado toast with eggs and bacon for hearty sustenance, and the housemade granola with local Elenos yogurt for something lighter. Grab a juice or latte for the road, and have the friendly team pack you a to-go picnic lunch for your cycling adventure.

After breakfast, pick up helmets and chic beach cruisers with baskets from the front desk, along with an easy-to-follow map. While the bike lane running parallel to the lake is flat and simple to navigate, the wide, gravelly Cross Kirkland Corridor offers stunning elevated views — think eagles swooping above the twinkling water — yet may require you to briefly push your bike up (and down) the steepest part of the hill.
