International indie-pop sensation rocks his way into Seattle.
You may not pronounce his name quite right—but chances are you’ve found yourself at some point humming passionately along to his catchy break-up song, “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Belgium born and Australian raised artist, Gotye (pronounced: gah-tee-ay), or a recent groupie entranced by his latest album, Making Mirrors, you know he puts on an unforgettable live performance.
Born Wouter De Backer, Gotye derives his name from the French translation of Wouter into Gaultier, which his mother used to call him as a pet name growing up. He recorded his first sample tracks in Australia in 2001 and sent them to every local radio station and recording company he could find. He was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback that inspired him to continue recording tracks.
Shortly after his sending out his initial four-track sample CD’s, De Backer was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Schroeder at a party and they decided to form the duo “The Basics” together. The band quickly became regulars on the Australian live-music scene and have continued to tour and record with Gotye over the years.
Gotye was eventually offered a distribution deal and he released his first album, Boardface, in 2003. His next album, Like Drawing Blood, was released in 2006 and was met with international praise and attention that put Gotye on the map and on the charts.
Gotye’s third studio album, Making Mirrors, landed him on the top of Australian, Belgian, Canadian, UK and US charts and made him an international success. The addictive album is diverse in its’ indie-pop vocals and beats while simultaneously uniform it each track’s haunting musicality.
