Plugged In: Protosong

 Give back. Get music.

It’s true that good music and good causes bring people together, and it never gets old.  Protosong brought together some of the best local, independent artists to contribute unreleased songs to an exclusive playlist that the public can purchase. For two weeks only, you pick the price and the money goes towards helping provide clean water to people in developing nations.

The campaign started on Oct 3rd and runs through the 17th. Their fundraising goal is $25,000. 70% of what you pay goes to One Day’s Wages, a grassroots movement to alleviate extreme global poverty. The rest supports the artists on the playlist.

Protosong was created by a group of students from Seattle Pacific University. The team doesn’t keep any of the money but has worked for several months with the individual artists, producing promo videos from the campaign and hosting a launch party where some of featured artists played live.

They created first playlist in February 2012 under the name “The Protosong Project”  where they  asked 14 small bands from their school to take a chance on a new idea and give them a song that had never been heard before. They were able to raised over $1,000 in less than three days and released 14 songs to everyone who paid a minimum of one dollar through a simple website. Every penny was given to the nonprofit organization charity: water, and provided 50 people with sustainable access to clean water for life.

It was then that they were convinced they were on to something and that they should continue growing the idea. Dave Dederer,  guitarist and singer for The Presidents of the United States of America, was also convinced, and joined the organization’s advisory board.

Artists included on the exclusive playlist are: Noah Gundersen, The Young Evils, Lemolo, Kris Orlowski, Ivan & Alyosha, Mary Lambert, Carson Henley, Smokey Brights and more. Below is just one of the many recordings with the featured artists found on the Protosong YouTube Channel.
