Featuring a new thali every week, Poppy’s new Thali Tuesdays deal offers one of the best savings in town.

The thali, an Indian term for a tray of harmonious dishes served at once, is the signature dish at James Beard Award winning chef Jerry Traunfeld’s Poppy in North Capitol Hill. Utilizing fresh herbs from Poppy’s extensive herb garden in the growing season, and spices in the colder months, Chef Traunfeld was inspired to situate the thali tray at the center of Poppy’s menu after visiting India and connecting with the shared dining experience.
Chef Traunfeld recently expanded the Thali trays built for one that are always found on Poppy’s menu to create a weekly Thali deal for two.
For $35, the Thali Tuesday deal includes:
- A weekly rotating Thali built for two (vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free thalis available)
- A bottle of wine or Poppy’s signature eggplant fries
We recently visited Poppy on Thali Tuesday to try the featured thali, which included Mad Hatcher Chicken with berbere spice and satsuma salad, as well as all of the following: apple raita, coconut and curry leaf beet soup, pomegranate walnut red cabbage, fennel persimmon salad, mashed chickpeas with parsley and preserved lemon, squash custard with pepitas and ginger snap, basmati rice pilaf, pickled purple daikon and nigella naan. While that list looks long (because it is!), the shared thali was the perfect amount of food for my husband and I. We paired our thali with a bottle of the Pinot Noir.

However, not able to resist the rest of the items on Poppy’s menu, we also ordered the Eggplant Fries with sea salt and buckwheat honey, as well as the Almond Sage Cake with bourbon ice cream and fruit compote. The balance of sweet and savory in the eggplant fries was spot on, and the sage cake offered a deliciously sweet ending with hints of the spices we enjoyed in our thali.
In addition to the Thali Tuesdays deal, Poppy’s always-changing menu offers small and large plates, creative cocktails, killer desserts, and a daily thali built for one.
