Having lived in the Seattle area my entire life and because eating is one of my favourite hobbies, I have eaten at most of the restaurants around here. I can usually come up with a few recommendations for each cuisine and neighborhood fairly easily—with one exception: seafood.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
For the first time in 40 years, our beloved Pike Place Market is growing with the “MarketFront,” which should be ready for the public in spring 2017 The Market-centric expansion will reclaim an underutilized surface parking lot on Western Avenue, and create a dynamic public plaza with views of Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains, table space for farmers, craftspeople and artisan purveyors, retail space, low-income housing, a neighborhood center and parking.
Orcas Island, nicknamed “the gem of the San Juans”, had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend—a lovely downtown to shop and eat, a stunning shoreline, beautiful lakes, and walking, hiking, and biking trails. There are plenty of lodging options: you can camp, stay in a cabin, yurt, at a resort, or book an airbnb. Once on the island, you can take the ferry to visit the other islands for free, including San Juan Island (Friday Harbor), Lopez Island, and Shaw Island.
Chef Shota Nakajima served a standout meal bringing Seattle its first traditional kaiseki-style Japanese restaurant. The overall experience at Naka is one of the best in recent memory. The atmosphere is modern, with light music playing in the background, and only a half-full dining area. The chic bar was busier than the dining room on the weeknight we visited, but gets fully booked on the weekend.
Coloring isn’t just for kids anymore.
Adult coloring books are everywhere these days. You can find them in gift shops, bookstores, craft stores, and online. Touted for their powers of stress-reduction and mindfulness, coloring books with intricate designs are a welcome reprieve from staring at a screen all day. They help quiet the mind and give us something to do when we’re binging on Netflix. It’s a fun activity to do with friends while catching up at a coffee shop or cafe and makes a thoughtful gift as well.
Mark your calendar! Feast Portland returns for year five September 15-18

When is the last time you went to the symphony?
Benaroya Hall is a beautiful and majestic venue that many of us hardly visit. Native Seattleites might remember when they took a grade school field trip to watch the symphony perform years ago. Those who are newer to the city may have never been, but many state that they’ve “been meaning to go”. The Seattle Symphony has something for everyone, offering a variety of programs, from casual and short to more sophisticated and slightly longer to family friendly.
Encouraging consumers to live in a more collective, sharing economy.
thredUP is a fashion resale website for consumers to buy and sell secondhand clothing online. Order a free Clean Out Kit, pack it with your gently used or new brand name items, send it back. I’ve tried selling on Poshmark and on Tradesy as well as locally at Plato’s Closet. thredUP ranks third, in front of Plato’s Closet. Here’s my thredUP review.
Showcasing “Slow Food Fast”, Stock is out to elevate and reinvent everyday ingredients and recipes in a casual and approachable environment. Chef/owner Chris Blanco focuses on comfort food that is inspired by the Northwest and Asian flavors. He puts a lot of time and care into making sure his customers get high-quality food quickly and easily.
The lineup was announced tonight at a free party at the Showbox Market. Bumbershoot tickets go on sale Friday at 10! The festival will be held Friday through Sunday of Labor Day Weekend instead of Saturday through Monday in past years. Local favorites Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Death Cab for Cutie will headline the weekend. There is a fair bit of EDM this year: Kygo, Pretty Lights, DJ Snake, Porter Robinson, Zed’s Dead, and Zhu.
