Wine O’Clock Wednesday: Go Glamping In A Vineyard

Glamour + Camping = Glamping — An unusual way to travel in Washington.

This summer, spend a luxurious night under the stars at the beautiful Destiny Ridge Vineyard, which overlooks the Columbia River in central Washington. This is glamping — glamorous camping — at its finest, amid the vines where Alexandria Nicole Cellars estate wines have their beginnings.

You’ll find a large canvas tent with a luxurious queen-size bed on a Persian carpet, a down duvet, towels, a French Press coffee pot, mugs, dishes, a mini-refrigerator and an alarm clock. Like all campers, glampers will be prepared for any kind of weather with an air-conditioning unit and a space heater.

Outside, there’s an enclosed, roofless shower — yes, running water to shower under the sun or the stars. On the deck, there’s also a propane barbcue, propane fire pit and — of course — wine glasses. You can sip award-winning Alexandria Nicole wines, grill dinner and make s’mores as the day draws to a close.

This is travel for the environmentally conscious. Electricity is generated by 20 wind spires, but at night, the stars light up the sky in a magnificent show that you’d never see in Seattle.

By day or by night, the views are spectacular. Take a walk through the vineyards while sipping lush, aromatic Viognier or refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. Or sing around the campfire while enjoying Cabernet Sauvignon or Estate Syrah.

Glamping offers a special way to relax in Washington wine country. You can spend the day touring the wineries in Prosser and Red Mountain, or going fishing, hiking, bike riding, kayaking or horseback riding. Then bring back some wine and food for the grill, and kick back to enjoy an evening in the vines.

So make your reservations now. It’s time to unplug — leave your cell phones and laptops at home — and use this vacation to recharge yourself.
