One Saturday a month, volunteer with old and new friends

Team Works is a volunteer group that sends volunteers out into the community one Saturday a month for four months, from September to December. Registration for fall session opened earlier this month, on August 17th. Team Works is a social volunteering league that gets you and your friends out into the community giving back and doing good—and yes, you have fun too. Volunteer sessions last from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. You’ll be finished in time to enjoy a late brunch!

Victoria is lovely year round. When I visited last December, I enjoyed all the holiday festivities, but I wondered what it would be like when the weather was nicer. It was a bit too soggy and grey to explore as much as I would have liked. Summer though? Wow. I returned this past weekend and I’m in love. We biked, we strolled, we browsed, and we ate. It was the perfect weekend getaway.

If you’re thinking about visiting Victoria this summer, now is the time! Here are some fun events and activities for the rest of summer! The flowers are in full bloom and the streets are filled with people from all around the world. My favorite way to get there is via the Victoria Clipper, boarding from Pier 69 near Olympic Sculpture Park. Park at the Bell Street Garage for $10/day and walk onto the passenger-only ship for a scenic 2 hour and 45 minute ride. You can make it a day, overnight, or weekend trip.

With a strong U.S. dollar and sunny summer weather, now is the perfect time to travel to Canada’s west coast. Vancouver is a mere 3-hour drive north and makes an awesome day or weekend trip destination. Personally, I’d recommend staying the weekend since there are so many awesome things to do, see, and eat. Like Seattle, the city is diverse and near the water, with delicious food, friendly people, and beautiful nature to explore. In addition, we are partnering with Sea to Sky Gondola to give away a pair of round trip passes to the summit.

Formed in 2012, ON AN ON is an American experimental-pop band out of Minneapolis, made up of long-time friends and collaborators, Nate Eiesland (vocals, guitar), Ryne Estwing (bass, vocals) and Alissa Ricci (keys, vocals). On July 24, 2015 they released their sophomore album And The Wave Has Two Sides. Be sure to catch ON AN ON at Capitol Hill Block Party this Saturday at the Vera Stage at 7:15pm!

Marée Bistro & Bar opened in February this year with a gorgeous waterfront view of Alki beach. Marée means ‘the tide’ in French, named after its location and inspired by the seasonality of the Northwest. Chef Andy Dekle sources sustainably raised and harvested meat, game, shellfish, fish and produce from nearby purveyors. Aspects of the menu change often, because truly seasonal is fleeting at certain times of the year and with certain products; other menu items change with the time of the year.

As we enter summer—though it doesn’t quite feel or look like it this week—in the Northwest, it’s a great time to refresh and rejuvenate your skin. Megan Sevcik opened Honey Skin Spa in 2011, a boutique skin spa located in Madison Valley that focuses on creating beautiful skin for men and women of all ages and skin types. From those who have battled awful adult acne to rosacea and broken capillaries, to fine lines and large pores, she handles it all with care and passion.

The two-day, all ages and free The Ballard SeafoodFest began in 1974 as a community celebration of Ballard’s historic connection to the fishing industry and the neighborhood’s Nordic roots. Today, this festival attracts over 65,000 people who come to enjoy the traditional salmon barbecue and much more: local music, arts and crafts, family entertainment, a beer garden, a skate event, and yes – more seafood! The event is Saturday, July 9: 11:00 am – 10:00 pm and Sunday, July 10: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm.
